Media Advisory: Ireland to Announce Its Membership in European Consortium for Ocean Research Drilling

What: News Conference outlining Ireland’s new role in international marine research program, followed by tour of JOIDES Resolution, the scientific research vessel in port as a drilling expedition gets underway off Ireland’s shores.

Minister Noel Dempsey, T.D., Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, will announce Ireland’s participation in the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP), an international marine research program dedicated to advancing scientific understanding of the Earth through seafloor drilling and coring, and establishment of long-term borehole observatories.

The briefing will be held aboard the JOIDES Resolution, an IODP drillship and floating laboratory that supports international teams of scientists as they embark upon research expeditions. IODP is funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation, Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and the European Consortium of Ocean Research Drilling.

Minister Dempsey will be joined by IODP scientists who will explain the expedition that brings the drillship to Ireland: examination of the carbonate mounds off the West of Ireland in the Porcupine Seabight.

Media representatives will be welcome to tour the JOIDES at the news briefing’s conclusion, its 13 scientific laboratories, sophisticated drilling equipment, and other high-technology features. Among the ship’s unique features is the dynamic positioning system that allows it to maintain a specific location despite winds and waves, while drilling in water as deep as 8,200 meters.
