2009-2010 Schlanger Ocean Drilling Fellowship Program Winners Are Named
−Five Students from Around the United States Are Chosen to Receive Merit-based Science Award −

(Washington, D.C.) – The Consortium for Ocean Leadership is pleased to announce that the winners of the 2009-2010 Schlanger Ocean Drilling Fellowship Program have been selected.  Each year, the program offers the $28,000 awards to graduate students so they can conduct research related to the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program, an international marine research program dedicated to advancing scientific understanding of the Earth through drilling, coring and monitoring the subseafloor.

The 2009-2010 Schlanger Fellows are:

  • Heather Ford, University of California, Santa Cruz
  • Matthew Knuth, University of Wisconsin-Madison
  • Francois Paquay, University of Hawaii at Manoa
  • Leah Schneider, Pennsylvania State University
  • Stella Woodard, Texas A&M University

“The Schlanger Fellowship is an important component of the U.S. Science Support Program because it supports young researchers,” said USSSP Director, Jeff Schuffert.  “We are excited to have found such outstanding and motivated students whose research will increase the science community’s knowledge of past climate change, earthquake zone properties and land-ocean interactions.”

The award is used as a stipend and put towards tuition, research costs and travel for the Schlanger Fellows.  The Fellowship will conclude during the summer of 2010, when the Schlanger Fellows will travel to the Ocean Leadership headquarters in Washington, D.C. to present the initial results of their research.
