Eric Barron (NCAR)
Eric J. Barron, director of Boulder's National Center for Atmospheric Research, has been chosen as the new president of Florida State University.
(From DailyCamera / by Erica Meltzer) -- Barron, 58, is a graduate of Florida State University. He succeeds T.K. Wetherell, who has been president since 2003.
Barron was one of three finalists for the position, chosen by a search committee from 26 applicants. The head of the search committee said Barron's experience leading a top research institution was key to his selection as the university seeks to improve its standing as a leading public research university.
Barron has been director of NCAR since 2008. While there, he dealt with significant budget challenges and raised some hackles within the scientific community by closing the Center for Capacity Building, which studied the impact of climate change.

Rick Anthes, president of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, which oversees NCAR, said Barron's ability to make tough decisions generated confidence in his leadership abilities. Anthes said Barron leaves NCAR with a more stable and streamlined budget process while maintaining strong research programs.
Barron also established the Integrated Science Program, which promotes interdisciplinary research within NCAR, Anthes said.
"Eric was a terrific director, and we're sorry to see him leave," said Anthes.
Anthes said he'll talk to the Board of Trustees on Wednesday about starting the search process for a new director.
NCAR was established in 1960 to serve as a focus for research on atmospheric and related science problems. NCAR is recognized for its contributions to understanding earth systems, including climate change, Earth-Sun interactions and weather formation and forecasting.
