National Ocean Sciences Bowl Announces 2009 Scholarship Winners - Florida, North Carolina Students Named National Ocean Scholarship Program Scholars -
(Washington, D.C.)- The Consortium for Ocean Leadership’s National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB) is pleased to announce their 2009 National Ocean Scholars. High school seniors Brian Schuster of Raleigh, North Carolina and Emily Northrop of Coral Gables, Florida beat out 23 applicants to be awarded the $1,500 scholarship for their first year of college.
A review team evaluated the applications and selected Schuster and Northrop after assessing their transcripts, SAT scores, recommendation letters, essays and overall interest in marine and coastal science.
Both Schuster and Northrop are highly qualified scholarship winners. With a goal of leading innovation in the field of renewable energy in a way that considers fragile ecosystems, along with a 2120 on the SAT and a grade point average (GPA) of 3.95, Schuster was a deserving candidate of the scholarship. He plans to attend North Carolina State University in the fall and aspires to create his own major in marine engineering. Not only did Northrop get a 2160 on her SAT and obtain a 3.9 GPA, she has a true passion for the ocean, which she hopes to expand into a professional, rewarding career after majoring in chemistry or geology at Haverford College.
“I continue to be impressed by the level of intelligence that the NOSB students have about our oceans,” said President & CEO of the Consortium for Ocean Leadership, Robert B. Gagosian. “These students are the future scientists and leaders of our world and the NOSB is proud to help them advance their education in ocean science.”
To be eligible to apply for the NOSB scholarship, now in its 7th year, applicants have to participate in NOSB, have a career goal in the ocean sciences or a marine-related field and demonstrate academic success and integrity throughout their high school career. Applicants also have to be scheduled to graduate high school during the spring semester of the scholarship year.
