The ocean was front and center in Washington this week. World’s Ocean Day launched the beginning of the week’s activities along with Capitol Hill Ocean Week (CHOW). The House Appropriations Committee adopted its FY10 spending bill for several of the ocean agencies including NOAA, NSF and NASA while the other ocean agency budgets, such as ONR, will be decided later this month (more information below). Furthermore, NOAA Administrator Jane Lubchenco was quite busy this week speaking on NPR on Monday morning, kicking off CHOW on Tuesday and testifying before the Senate Commerce Committee today. The House Natural Resources Committee reported favorably on several ocean-related bills and the Senate Commerce Committee held a hearing regarding the “blue economy”. The momentum on ocean policy will continue next week as the full House of Representatives will consider FY10 Commerce-Justice-Science Appropriations Bill and the House Natural Resources Committee will hold a hearing on Congressman Sam Farr’s Oceans-21 legislation (H.R.21).
Lastly, I would appreciate it if you would take a few moments to visit the new Ocean Leadership Web site (www.oceanleadership.org), which we launched this week. We hope that you find it to be a dynamic and useful source of information, and we welcome your thoughts and suggestions for improving the site. It is important that we hear from you so the site can provide the information most important to you in the most accessible manner. Thanks.
