(Washington, D.C.) – The Consortium for Ocean Leadership’s National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB®) is pleased to announce the third place team from the 12th Annual National Ocean Sciences Bowl Finals Competition, Cranston High School West, has traveled to the Great Lakes for the team’s third place prize. The five-day trip was awarded to the team after their stellar performance in the academic science competition.
The 2009 NOSB was held at the Smithsonian Natural History Museum’s Sant Ocean Hall in April. After testing their ocean knowledge in the regional and two-day Finals Competition, Cranston High School West took the third prize, a trip to the Great Lakes hosted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab (GLERL) and the Cooperative Institute for Limnology and Ecosystems Research (CILER).
During the trip, the team, Meaghan Sullivan, Pasha Sadikov, Alexa Choy, and Sara Hogarth with Coach Steve Krous, visited Lake Huron’s Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary in Alpena, Michigan, snorkeled on a shallow shipwreck and kayaked the scenic AuSable River. The team also took part in field sampling aboard a NOAA research vessel, the Laurentian, at the Lake Michigan Field Station in Muskegon, Michigan.
“Growing up in Rhode Island, the “Ocean State,” I’ve had a natural bias in my teaching and coaching toward Narragansett Bay and the Atlantic Ocean,” said Krous. “But now, thanks to this trip, I’ve seen first-hand just how influential the Great Lakes are. This experience will dramatically change the way I teach coastal zone issues because I now have a large amount of case studies that I can use to better teach interdisciplinary science and problem-solving skills to my students.”
The third place trip was made possible with the support of the National Oceanographic Partnership Program, GLERL and CILER. For more information about NOSB, visit www.nosb.org.
