The National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB), in conjunction with IODP-Deep Earth Academy, is bringing a unique professional development opportunity to NOSB coaches.
The opportunity is a two week long on-line course, taking place November 9 -22, 2009 which will center around NOSB’s 2010 competition theme, Technology. The purpose of the course is to provide our NOSB coaches with the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of marine technology.
The online course will cover the three realms of the ocean; surface, mid-water, and the deep sea. Topics in these realms will include: satellites, ROVs, manned submersibles, tagging of marine animals, and sub-seafloor drilling technology aboard the JOIDES Resolution. Guest participants include:
- Tom Nolan, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory
- Jorge Vazquez, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory
- Doug Levin, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
- Randy Kochevar, Stanford University
- Bruce Strickrott, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
- Jay Miller, Texas A&M University
- Mary Reagan, Columbia University
During the two week period that the course will be offered there will be three live webinars, presented by these guest scientists. Participation in these live webinars involves logging into the at the specified time, listening to the lecture, following along with the presentation, and interacting with the presenter by emailing him/her questions they will be able to answer during the presentation. The course will also be implemented through asynchronous activities, such as online chats and assigned reading. Since these activities are asynchronous, coaches will be able to participate at times that are most convenient for them during the specified two-weeks. Additionally, in order to provide a link between this seminar and NOSB, each of the scientific participants will be writing questions for the NOSB competitions.
Participating coaches will complete this course with a much stronger understanding of current technology and will be able to better prepare their students for the 2010 NOSB Regional and Finals Competitions.
How you can participate: Register a team at your regional competition. If you register by November 2, you will automatically be enrolled to participate in this “webinar”.
If you are unable to register by November 2, please express your interest in participating to your Regional Coordinator. We will enroll non-registered but interested NOSB coaches (i.e. coaches that are definitely planning on coaching a team this year, but have not registered) as space allows.
