President, Oceanic Institute (OI)

An affiliate of Hawai'i Pacific University, Oceanic Institute (OI) is a private, not-for-profit research and development organization dedicated to marine aquaculture, biotechnology, & coastal resource management. OI's mission is to develop and transfer economically responsible technologies to increase aquatic food production while promoting the sustainable use of ocean resources.
JOB SUMMARY
The President is accountable to OI's Chairman of the Board of Trustees. The President has the overall authority and responsibility for all matters related to the Institute and leads OI with adherence to the Bylaws. The President has the responsibility of integrating and overseeing OI's mission and implements the Contract of Affiliation between HPU and OI including its attachment, Plan of Cooperation.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATION
- Doctoral degree or Master's degree in a science/technology field combined with strong management skills.
- Ten (10) years of executive management experience.
- Proven track record of securing and managing public and private grants, demonstrated ability to ensure regulatory compliance and work effectively with the governing Boards, experience in forging partnerships with various constituencies. (including State and Federal agencies)
- Expertise and knowledge of aquaculture, and defined relationships within the industry, existing relationships with local federal delegations, federal funding agency personnel, and industry.
DUTIES
- The President works closely with the Board of Trustees and the Chairman is responsible for diversification and expansion of OI's revenue base, including maintenance and stabilization of existing federal funds, and securing public and private grants and contracts from new sources.
- Responsible for institutional advancement at international, national, regional, and local levels and pays close attention to development and implementation of fundraising, and technology transfer and commercialization programs.
- Ensures that members of the senior management team work cooperatively.
- Enforces values and operating principles of OI management and staff.
- Provides oversight on all financial, accounting, and human resource matters.
- Ensures that staff is motivated, and that OI is operated smoothly with a positive image.
- Provides oversight and support for OI to be an internationally recognized leader in research, development, and education.
- Responsible for compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and policies.
- Develops policies and procedures as required.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees and provides advice and counsel to the Chairman and others as the Chairman directs.
