JOIDES Resolution Currently in Pacific for Shatsky Rise Formation Expedition 324
The JOIDES Resolution (JR) made its scheduled Port Call in Yokohama, Japan September 4-9, 2009. An international team of scientists completed an eight-week Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) expedition in the Bering Sea and a new team embarked on its next expedition to the Shatsky Rise Formation (Expedition 324) in the Pacific Ocean.
The Center for Deep Earth Exploration (CDEX) at the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), and the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program-U.S. Implementing Organization (USIO) welcomed guests on Saturday, September 5th at 10:00am at the Port of Yokohama, Daikoku T-3 for welcome remarks and a tours of the refurbished drilling vessel. Speakers for the press conference included, Masahiko Hori (MEXT); David Divins (USIO); Professor Kozo Takahashi (Co-Chief Scientist Expedition 323); and Dr. Takashi Sano (Co-Chief Scientist Expedition 324).
Seven expeditions have been and will be conducted during the first phase of IODP drilling operations in 2009 and 2010. These expeditions are being conducted aboard the JOIDES Resolution, the U.S.-sponsored riserless drilling vessel, managed by the U.S. Implementing Organization.
IODP is an international marine research program dedicated to advancing scientific understanding of the Earth through drilling, coring, and monitoring the subseafloor. The program operates three drilling platforms: Chikyu, a riser-equipped vessel provided by Japan; the JOIDES Resolution, the refurbished research vessel provided by the United States; and mission-specific drilling platforms managed by ECORD. The JR has been investigating the Earth’s origin and evolution through scientific ocean coring worldwide, since 1985.
