(UPDATED 12/22/2010):

As part of the 2009 Stimulus or ARRA (American Recovery and Reinvestment Act) spending, NSF’s Earth Sciences (EAR) and Ocean Sciences (OCE) divisions each received $5M in facility-related investment. The funds are targeted toward Facilities that support EarthScope and MARGINS science objectives, with an initial emphasis on onshore/offshore studies of the Cascadia margin.  The ARRA funds are being utilized by UNAVCO, IRIS, and OBSIP to improve seismic and geodetic datasets in the Cascadia region including improvements to real-time GPS capabilities, densification of the onshore seismic networks, and the construction and deployment of an array of ocean-bottom seismometers for offshore community experiments.

A two-day workshop will be held at the Hotel Monaco on October 15 and 16 in downtown Portland, Oregon.  The workshop agenda is available for information and planning: http://www.oceanleadership.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/Cascadia_workshop_final_agenda.pdf.  The deadline for registering was July 15th 2010.  Registration, hotel and travel information can be found at: http://www.certain.com/system/profile/form/index.cfm?PKformID=0x9169224b4b

At this Cascadia Initiative Workshop in October, we will discuss the full range of opportunities associated with this new initiative. While the primary goal of the workshop is to determine a deployment plan for the fleet of ocean bottom seismometers being built with ARRA funds, we will also focus on several complementary objectives related to maximizing the scientific return from the Initiative’s investment (see preliminary agenda below). To help generate a lively discussion of proposed OBS experiments, additional data products, and complimentary experiments, the workshop organizers request that you consider submitting a 1-2 page White Paper describing your ideas for improving the Initiative. Nine of these white papers will be selected as 20 minute oral presentations that cover both the scientific questions that the authors consider to be high priority objectives for the Cascadia Initiative and any proposed actions or deployment plans that will help answer these questions. We request that all participants who submit white papers bring a poster presenting their ideas. There will be time allotted for all participants to view the posters and for their content to be included in summary recommendations presented to the group during a plenary session. Additionally, there will be an opportunity for all participants to present 1-2 slides with their proposed ideas during breakout groups. White papers can be submitted either by an individual or group of workshop attendees. OBS instrument capabilities and operational parameters are briefly summarized below to assist with the development of realistic deployment plans.

The deadline for white paper submittal was September 8th, 2010.  However late submittals of white papers are encouraged; although there may not be presentation time still available during the main session, these will be highly useful for the breakout session discussions.  Please submit white papers to: cascadia@oceanleadership.org. A list of white papers submitted as well as copies of those white papers are available at: http://www.oceanleadership.org/wp-content/uploads/cascadia/

Design and construction of sixty intermediate bandwidth OBS is presently underway at LDEO, SIO and WHOI.  Twenty are trawl resistant for shallow depths (less than 1000m), fifteen are trawl resistant for either shallow or intermediate depths (up to 5500m), and twenty-five are intermediate depth instruments (1000 – 5500m). The OBSIP IICs have prepared a white paper that provides the logistical constraints for potential Cascadia OBS deployment plans: http://www.oceanleadership.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/Guidelines_for_Cascadia_OBS_Deployments_v2.pdf

The Cascadia Amphibious Facility Planning Group Report from a July 2009 workshop held at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory provides background information: http://www.oceanleadership.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/Casc_Facil_Wkshp_Report.pdf

The NSF Cascadia Initiative Workshop Report is available at:  http://www.oceanleadership.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/CI_Workshop-Report_Final.pdf

Conveners: Jeff McGuire (WHOI), Chris Goldfinger (OSU), Susan Schwartz (UCSC), Doug Toomey (Oregon), Kelin Wang (PGC).  Questions for the conveners concerning the workshop should be addressed to:  cascadia@oceanleadership.org
