Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (U.S. Implementing Organization and U.S. Science Support Program)
For nearly two weeks in September, the JOIDES Resolution was working 75 kilometers west of Vancouver Island, Canada as part of IODP Expedition 328 Cascadia ACORK. The goal of the Cascadia ACORK Expedition (September 8-19, 2010) was to deploy an “ACORK” (Advanced Circulation Obviation Retrofit Kit), into a new borehole drilled 330 meters into the seafloor, at a water depth of 1300 meters. The ACORK will detect changes in pressure and temperature – data will be stored over the next year when the ACORK will be connected to the NEPTUNE Canada cabled seafloor observatory network. The expedition was led by Earl Davis of the Canadian Geological Survey. The Cascadia ACORK expedition was preceded by multiple public events in Victoria. During the port call, nearly 150 people toured the JOIDES Resolution and many attended two evening lectures focused on scientific ocean drilling and ocean observing systems. For graduate students interested in becoming involved in IODP, the Consortium for Ocean Leadership is now accepting applications for the Schlanger Ocean Drilling Fellowship. Schlanger Fellowships offer merit-based awards for outstanding graduate students to conduct research related to IODP. Research may be directed toward the objectives of upcoming or past expeditions or may address broader themes. Selected fellows will receive an award of $28,000 to be used for stipend, research, or other approved costs. Applicants can be enrolled in either a Ph.D. or M.S. program at any U.S. institution, including those that have had little or no previous involvement in IODP. The application deadline is November 15, 2010.
