The first and second place winners of the Finals competition recently returned from the trips they were awarded for placing at the competition.
The national champions, Marshfield High School from Wisconsin, Seth Berger, Alex Jensen, Michael Josephson, and Coach Paul Herder, sailed aboard Ocean Classroom Foundation’s Student Schooner Vessel the Westward. Once aboard, they became crew, hoisting and easing sails, steering the ship, standing lookout at the bow and participating in night watches. The vessel started in Boston, stopped in Provincetown, Mass. to visit the Center for Coastal Studies, and continued on to Appledore Island, Maine to see the University of New Hampshire’s Shoals Marine Lab, before returning to Boston.
The second place team, the Marine Academy of Science and Technology (MAST) from New Jersey, won a marine science trip to the coast of North Carolina. During the trip, the team, Danielle Delp, Robert Gaffey, Patrick Whalen, Alexander Kloo, and Derek Wolosyzn, with Coach Barbara Boyd, toured the Duke University Marine Lab, the University of North Carolina’s Institute of Marine Sciences, the Carteret Community College Aquaculture Center and the North Carolina Aquarium. They also went out on Duke University’s Research Vessel, the Susan Hudson, kayaked, snorkeled, collected and sampled marine organisms, explored downtown Beaufort and went clam digging.
The NOSB Office would also like to welcome their new intern, Erica LaFramboise. Erica will be assisting the program office with NOSB activities this year.
