Last week, Allison Byrd accompanied the second place team, Marine Academy of Science and Technology (MAST) from Highlands, New Jersey to North Carolina for their summer award trip. They had the opportunity to visit the UNC Institute of Marine Science, as well as both the NOAA and Duke University Marine Labs. The students also had the chance to participate in Gulf Stream ecology research methods, SCUBA dive, and kayak on the Shackleford Banks barrier islands.
This week, the first place team, Marshfield High School from Marshfield, Wisconsin is aboard the staysail schooner, Westward, which departed out of Boston as part of the Ocean Classroom Foundation’s sea education summer program. The students will spend this week sailing along the New England coast, exploring the local marine environment, observing whales in their natural habitat, and learning how to sail.
