The heat is beginning to affect all of us in Washington this week. On the Hill, there isn’t much to report on the Appropriations front and, as you know, not much to say about the debt ceiling or the deficit discussions either, except that they continue to talk and talk. There aren’t many days left before a congressional recess, so something has to happen soon or there will be more action than any of us bargained for. Other activities on the Hill involve several Senate and House committees who are ramping up their attention on oil spill restoration and response legislation. More information on this specific oil-related legislation and upcoming congressional activities can be found in the Congressional section below.
On the other hand, this week, our Ocean Leadership office has been buzzing with activity. We are happy to have hosted both the 2010-2011 Schlanger Fellow recipients, as well as the the U.S. Advisory Committee for Scientific Ocean Drilling (USAC), who was holding their three-day summer meeting here. I had the pleasure of welcoming the group to Ocean Leadership and discussing the current budget situation in Washington. It was great to see many familiar faces as well as meet the new Fellows. The excitement of a new scientific ocean drilling program was pervasive throughout the week. We will post a summary of the meeting when it becomes available. I would like to thank all who attended and worked on the meeting; from my perspective, it was very successful.
Be safe this weekend as temperatures in many states are expected to top 100 degrees. In Washington, I think this is a good weekend to visit those museums that are still on my list.
