Global Conference on Oceans, Climate and Security (GCOCS)
Filed under: Events,News & Resources
Battelle Memorial Institute and the Collaborative Institute for Oceans, Climate and Security at UMass Boston are pleased to present a three-day conference on May 21-23, 2012. GCOCS 2012 will be held at the Seaport Hotel and Conference Center in Boston, Massachusetts and is currently accepting abstracts and sponsorships. This is a signature event of the Collaborative Institute for Oceans, Climate and Security at the University of Massachusetts Boston and is proudly co-presented by Battelle Memorial Institute.
In response to elevated awareness of the impacts a changing climate can have on national, economic, business, cultural and human security, a new focused line of inquiry has emerged and will be explored at GCOCS. Our collective future may depend upon better understanding the inter-connectedness between oceans, climate and security.
The purpose of the first GCOCS is threefold:
- Raise the awareness level of the threat of climate change to our oceans and the consequent threat to our human and national security;
- Identify, prioritize and fill scientific and technological knowledge gaps which inhibit understanding of and adaption to future threats;
- Generate global security policy and governance recommendations in the light of the climate, ocean, and security continuum.
