Instrument Scientist, Neptune Canada Project
Filed under: Employment - Science Community,News & Resources,Opportunities

The NEPTUNE Canada cabled ocean network forms a major part of the Ocean Networks Canada Observatory. Over the next two decades, NEPTUNE Canada will reveal a wealth of ocean environmental processes and imagery through the many arrays of scientific instruments deployed between 17m and 2660m water-depths in the NE Pacific Ocean. During the first phase, over 130 instruments are being installed, with over 40 different instrument types, and hosting over 400 sensors. This represents a capital investment of over $13 million for the instruments and their connectivity to the backbone system. Plans are for instruments to be serviced through two 20-day maintenance cruises a year enabling them to be periodically repaired or replaced, while new instruments are added to the system. Instrument costs and maintenance are a substantial part of the annual operating budget for NEPTUNE Canada. To ensure the scientific functioning and maintenance of these vital instrument arrays, smooth logistics is crucial. An Instrument Scientist is required to guide the Engineering group as it continues integrating and maintaining new instruments to the network. He/She will report to the Associate Director Engineering who manages the underwater plant O&M program.
