Opportunity: Graduate Student – Oceanography, Texas A&M

The Department of Oceanography and the Gulf of Mexico Integrated Spill Response Consortium seeks an M.S. or Ph.D. graduate student in oceanography who is interested in oceanographic data management and informatics.
The consortium will soon begin a three-year program collecting various types of physical and chemical oceanographic data from moored and drifting buoys, research vessels and aircraft. Several numerical models will simulate the transport and fate of spilled oil and dispersants. The student will work with consortium scientists under the direction of the Data Manager, Dr. Matthew Howard, Research Scientist, to assemble and prepare the project’s data sets and selected model outputs for submission to the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative’s data management unit and appropriate long-term repositories. The ideal candidate will have some programming experience, familiarity with UNIX and software such as MatLab or IDL. The graduate student will work 20 hours per week and will receive a stipend, tuition and fees, and health insurance. The Department of Oceanography is home to 30 faculty members and 75 graduate students and conducts research around the world.
