Program Update: Integrated Ocean Drilling Program – August 2011
Filed under: Discovery,Program Updates,Program Updates - Integrated Ocean Drilling Program,Scientific Ocean Drilling
The JOIDES Resolution is currently docked in Curaçao preparing for Expedition 336: Mid-Atlantic Microbiology, which will be led by co-chief scientists Katrina Edwards (University of Southern California) and Wolfgang Bach (University of Bremen). The expedition will initiate long-term microbiological, geochemical, and hydrological experimentation within the seafloor at North Pond, an isolated, northeast-trending sediment pond on the western flank of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Expedition 336 will be the second microbiology-focused expedition on the JOIDES Resolution over the past year. IODP Expedition 329: South Pacific Gyre Subseafloor Life recently released its preliminary report, which can be read online at http://publications.iodp.org/preliminary_report/329.
If you are interested in learning more about upcoming opportunities to participate in the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP), we invite you to visit the website of the U.S. Science Support Program (USSSP) at www.iodp-usssp.org. The website was re-launched in August to provide the U.S. IODP community with readily available and clearly organized information regarding scientific ocean drilling. Turn to the site for information on how to apply to sail, funding opportunities, news and resources, and outreach material. The website currently features an opportunity for scientific participation on the Newfoundland Sediment Drifts Expedition, which will examine the record of early Late Cretaceous and Paleogene “Extreme Climate” events and the possible onset of Eocene northern hemisphere glaciation. The expedition is scheduled for June 18 – August 17, 2012. The deadline for U.S.-affiliated scientists to apply to sail on this expedition is September 15, 2011. For more information about the expedition and how to apply to sail, please join us at a webinar on September 6, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. EDT or visit http://iodp-usssp.org/expeditions/apply-to-sail/. For additional information about the goals of this expedition, please review the original proposal at http://iodp.tamu.edu/scienceops/expeditions/newfoundland_sediment_drifts.html.
