Program Update: Integrated Ocean Drilling Program – September 2011

The JOIDES Resolution set sail from Bridgetown, Barbados in September 2011 for the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Expedition 336: Mid-Atlantic Microbiology. Led by co-chief scientists Katrina Edwards (University of Southern California) and Wolfgang Bach (University of Bremen), the expedition will begin long-term microbiological, geochemical, and hydrological experimentation at North Pond, an isolated, northeast-trending sediment pond on the western flank of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. During the expedition’s first two weeks, the 14-year old CORK observatory installed in Hole 395A was successfully removed and the pressure and temperature data downloaded. The expedition is now preparing to log the borehole with the Deep Exploration Biosphere Investigative tool (DEBI-t), a new in situ instrument for detecting microbial life in ocean floor boreholes. Read daily and weekly summaries here.
If you are interested in sailing on a future expedition, IODP is currently accepting applications to sail on Expedition 344: Costa Rica Seismogenesis Project (CRISP) 2 and IODP Expedition 345: Hess Deep Plutonic Crust. The deadline to apply to sail is December 15, 2011.
IODP has recently expanded opportunities for scientists and students new to scientific ocean drilling to participate and learn more about the program. First is a new fellowship program to encourage minority graduate students studying geoscience or engineering to complete research in topics related to scientific ocean drilling. The deadline to apply for this fellowship is October 31, 2011. IODP is also offering, for the first time, its popular short course at the GSA Annual Meeting. Register now for the “IODP Primer: An Introduction to Ocean Drilling Programs,” which will take place the afternoon of October 8, 2011, in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
