Program Update: National Ocean Sciences Bowl – March 2011

The National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB) staff attended their first National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) Conference in San Francisco, California from March 10-13, 2011. NOSB hosted a table at the National Marine Educators Association (NMEA) “Whale of a Share-a-Thon” on Thursday, March 10, where attendees were encouraged to stop by, pick up information on ocean and marine related educational activities and learn how they could incorporate the information into the classroom. NOSB hopes to attend future NSTA conferences to inform more teachers about their program.
The NOSB National office is currently busy gearing up for the NOSB Finals, which will be held in Galveston, Texas at Texas A&M University, Galveston from April 29 – May 1, 2011. The following teams will be attending the competition:

- Blue Crab Bowl – Bishop Sullivan Catholic High School
- Blue Heron Bowl – North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics
- Blue Lobster Bowl – Lexington High School

- Dolphin Challenge – Langham Creek High School
- Great Lakes Bowl – Dexter High School
- Grunion Bowl – La Jolla High School
- Hurricane Bowl – Long Beach High School
- Lake Sturgeon Bowl – Marshfield High School
- Loggerhead Challenge – Star Charter School
- Los Angeles Surf Bowl – Santa Monica High School
- Manatee Bowl – Westwood High School
- Nor’easter Bowl – Contoocook Valley Regional High School
- Orca Bowl – Friday Harbor High School
- Penguin Bowl – Gilmour High School
- Quahog Bowl – Cranston High School West
- Salmon Bowl – Neah-Kah-Nie High School
- Sea Lion Bowl – Mission San Jose High School
- Shore Bowl – Marine Academy of Science and Technology
- Southern Stingray Bowl – Irmo High School
- Spoonbill Bowl – Eastside High School
- Trout Bowl – Poudre High School
- Tsunami Bowl – Juneau-Douglas/Thunder Mountain High School
These teams will participate in interactive field trips, an engaging career event and a new pilot Policy Briefing component designed to improve their critical thinking and cooperative learning skills.
NOSB also partnered with NMEA and the Ocean Today Kiosk to sponsor the 2011 Living on the Ocean Planet video contest. This year, the contest theme was “Human Responses to Ocean Events.” The national 1st place video team will receive HD Flip video cameras and an all-expense paid trip to Galveston, Texas to premiere their video at the NOSB Finals. The 1st place team’s video will also premiere on the Ocean Today Kiosk.
