Dr. Sylvia Earle

Wemo Media today announced that legendary oceanographer Dr.Sylvia Earle has joined the Board of Advisors for its first Maker Media title, theBlu (www.theblu.com), bringing the Ocean to life on the web.

(From UnderwaterTimes) – “We are honored to have Sylvia on the Board of Advisors guiding theBlu to be a meaningful experience of the world’s oceans and serving as a long-lasting and beneficial platform to entertain and educate people all over the world about our vital and precious Oceans” said Wemo Media’s Co-Founder & CEO Neville Spiteri. “Sylvia is a leader in the mission to increase awareness and respect for our Oceans on a global level and has found theBlu can do just that.”

Earle is considered to be the ambassador for the world’s oceans. An explorer, author, educator and filmmaker, Sylvia Earle is one of the most renowned and beloved ocean advocates and research scientists of all time. Always at the forefront of ocean research, Earle took part in Tektite II, a project which allowed teams of scientists to live underwater for weeks at a time, and which was sponsored jointly by the U.S. Navy, the Department of the Interior and NASA. In 1990 she was appointed Chief Scientist for the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), a position she held until 1992, at which time she founded her own organization Deep Ocean Exploration and Research (DOER).

“With every breath we take, every drop of water we drink, we are connected to the Ocean. It is our life support system. The Oceans deserve our respect and care, but you have to know something before you can care about it. TheBlu is an extraordinary way to enjoy the Oceans and learn about all the individual species that interdependently form our life support system and make the Oceans so vital to our individual well being and our planet as a whole. I am delighted to be part of theBlu and offering my guidance”.

Earle brings to theBlu more than 40 years of experience and knowledge in the field of oceanography, for which she has been commended time and again. In 1998, Time magazine named her as the first recipient of their “Hero of the Planet” and in 2000 the Library of Congress named her a “Living Legend.” More recently, in 2009, she was a TED Prize winner.

Earle is currently Chairman of Deep Ocean Exploration and Research (DOER) and an Explorer in Residence at National Geographic.
