From the President’s Office – 8/23/2012
It has been an incredibly busy and successful summer for the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI). On August 18th, the last of the seven Regional Scale Nodes (RSN) was installed, completing the installation of the primary nodes for the cabled component of the OOI infrastructure in the Northeast Pacific. This OOI regional cabled observatory will be the first in the United States, establishing an interactive network of ocean observing sensors, instruments, and moorings. The infrastructure is designed to operate continuously for 25 years and is scheduled to be operational in 2014. Congratulations to everyone involved in this great achievement. I am very proud of the Ocean Leadership, University of Washington, and L-3 MariPro team that made this happen. It is a huge milestone toward our ability to observe the ocean 24/7/365. More information on the RSN installation can be found in the Ocean Leadership News section of ONW #175. I encourage you to read it.
Have a wonderful weekend. I know it will be a quiet one here in Washington as everyone is squeezing in the last of their summer vacations. So, more room in the restaurants for those of us who are here!
Bob
