Dr. Robert Detrick
Dear NOAA Research Partners,
It is my distinct pleasure to announce that NOAA has chosen Dr. Robert Detrick as the Assistant Administrator for NOAA Research, Acting Chair of the NOAA Research Council and NOAA Climate Goal Lead. We’re looking forward to his official start on February 13, 2012.
Dr. Detrick comes to OAR with an outstanding research and administrative background. He has been the Director of the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Division of Earth Sciences since 2008, serving through the Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA) Mobility Program from his employer, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). At WHOI he was a senior scientist and Vice President for Marine Facilities and Operations.
Dr. Detrick has served on and chaired committees and panels for various international and national organizations including the RIDGE Steering Committee (chair from 1992-1995), the JOIDES Executive Committee of the Ocean Drilling Program (chair from 1996-1998) and the NSF Geosciences Advisory Committee (chair 2004-2005). He was a member of the Board of Governors of Joint Oceanographic Institutions (JOI) and chaired the JOI Board. He is a past President of AGU’s Tectonophysics Section and is chair of the International Continental Drilling Program (ICDP) Assembly of Governors.
I will return to my position as Deputy Assistant Administrator for programs and administration on February 20. I look forward to working with Dr. Detrick to strengthen our research partnerships in a culture of transparency. I am confident that he will guide NOAA Research forward, promoting innovation and integration across NOAA’s research enterprise to advance our holistic understanding of the Earth system.
Thank you for your continued support for NOAA Research, and please join me in welcoming Dr. Detrick to the OAR community.
Sincerely,
Craig McLean
Acting Assistant Administrator
