Program Update: Deep Earth Academy – April 2012
Deep Earth Academy (DEA) joined more than 3,000 hands-on exhibits, as well as celebrity attendees such as Bill Nye and the Myth Busters, at the second annual USA Science and Engineering Festival in Washington, D.C. April 28-29. The event drew more than 120,000 science enthusiasts of all ages to the D.C. Convention Center. At the booth, visitors extracted simulated cores from a mock ocean floor and used an identification guide to determine where in the ocean their core came from, as well as the scientific story it tells. Visitors also had the opportunity to learn more about ocean drilling science by talking to Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) scientists and exploring core models and other items on display. DEA staff and scientists also met one-on-one with interested kids and families in an “Encounters with Scientists and Engineers” event.
