Program Update: Deep Earth Academy – August 2012
Earlier this month, 22 teachers from Washington, D.C., New York, Delaware, Florida, and North Carolina joined Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) scientist Cecelia McHugh (Queens College, New York), diversity education expert Vanessa Westbrook (Westbrook Consulting), and staff from Deep Earth Academy and the U.S. Science Support Program at Consortium for Ocean Leadership for a three-day workshop titled Teaching Earth’s History and Processes – Exploring Science from Below the Seafloor and Resources to Teach it. This intensive, hands-on experience focused on incorporating scientific ocean drilling science into K-12 instruction and teaching to diverse audiences, while addressing how seafloor geology can fit into the new science framework assembled by the National Academies of Science and Next Generation Science Standards initiative spearheaded by Achieve, Inc.
