Nineteen grants were recently announced in response to the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative’s (GoMRI) RFP-II to support studies of the effects of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.  To learn more about these projects, click here.  The GoMRI has now awarded more than $130 million of the $500 million that BP committed to independent research into the effects of the tragic Deepwater Horizon oil spill on the Gulf of Mexico.

GoMRI, along with federal partners, will hold a Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill and Ecosystem Science Conference on January 21-23, 2013 in New Orleans, Louisiana.  The conference is open to the research and stakeholder communities.  To register, click here.  The abstract submission and early bird rate deadlines have been extended until September 17.  For more information on the conference scientific sessions, click here.  Student travel awards are now available, as well as student awards for outstanding research presentation and poster.  For more information, click here.

Following the second quarter of research performed by the eight GoMRI Research Consortia, 38 research cruises were completed, 35 meetings or workshops were hosted, and 24 peer-reviewed journal articles were published.  Research is still ramping up, so stay tuned for more results in the future.  You can learn more about the ongoing research here.

Check out the GoMRI Collaboration Forum to learn about opportunities to share resources, data, ship time, and equipment.
