Program Update: Integrated Ocean Drilling Program – February 2012

The JOIDES Resolution returned to service on February 15, following a brief period of unscheduled maintenance in Lisbon, Portugal. The ship is currently conducting Expedition 340T (Atlantis Massif Oceanic Core Complex), which concludes on March 3. For more information, please see the expedition 340T web page. The revised expedition schedule accounts for the unexpected repair stop. While some dates in the schedule have shifted, there has been no change in total operational days, and the science objectives of each upcoming expedition will remain uncompromised.
Earlier in February, the U.S. Advisory Committee for Scientific Ocean Drilling (USAC) held its winter 2012 meeting in Santa Cruz, California. During the three-day meeting, USAC discussed U.S. participation in the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) and provided Ocean Leadership staff with fresh perspectives on education and communication opportunities. USAC also reviewed U.S. applications to sail on upcoming IODP expeditions, recent workshop proposals, and Schlanger Ocean Drilling Fellowship applications. USAC’s summer 2012 meeting will be in Washington, D.C.
The U.S. Science Support Program has announced the speaker lineup for the 2012-2013 Distinguished Lecturer Series. This program is designed to bring the exciting scientific results and discoveries of the IODP to academic research institutions, museums, and aquaria across the country. To see a full list of speakers and topics, and to apply to host a Distinguished Lecturer, please visit the USSSP website.
