Program Update: Interagency Ocean Observation Committee – June 2012

The Summit Steering Committee and Co-Chairs are in the process of building out the structure and format for the IOOS Summit, which will take place November 13-16, 2012 in Herndon, Virginia. Meanwhile, federal agencies and other interested parties are highly encouraged to begin submitting Community White Papers (CWPs) for incorporation into the Summit proceedings. For more information on the Summit and to submit an expression of interest to attend, please visit the Summit website. Summit participation criteria, which were developed by the Summit Steering Committee and Co-Chairs, can be found on the website as well.
CWP submissions are open until July 20. In order to ensure success, the Summit organizers are soliciting the thoughts and voices of the community through focused, written submissions prior to the meeting. The CWPs should inform the development of U.S IOOS strategy to enhance U.S. IOOS capabilities over the next decade. The CWP guidelines can be found here. Given that the event can accommodate 200 individuals, the CWPs will be instrumental as criteria for Summit attendee selection. All CWPs will be reviewed and scored for Quality (1-10), Relevance (1-10), and Helpfulness/Format (1-10) by Chapter Leads and Summit Co-Chairs. One representative from the 30 top-rated submissions will be provided with an invitation to the Summit to assure representation of the topic at the meeting.
The IOOS Summit Proceedings will be divided into five chapters. The Steering Committee selected individuals to lead those chapters and are in the process of receiving confirmation from those individuals. The Chapters are:
- Highlighting the Past Decade
- User Requirement: Revisiting/Updating
- Observing System Capabilities: Gap Assessment
- Integration Challenges and Opportunities
- Vision for Next 10 Years
The IOOC Support Office set up a general email account that community members can use for any questions regarding the Summit. We will continue to provide reminders and updates via email to the IOOC, however, if you would like to keep up with the latest Summit updates, ‘like’ us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter.
The next full membership meeting takes place on August 16, 2012 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. EST at the Consortium for Ocean Leadership.
More information about the IOOC can be accessed here, which contains updated information regarding commenting opportunities on committee activities, information on upcoming and past events, and relevant scientific, technical, and policy publications.
