Program Update: Interagency Ocean Observation Committee – May 2012
The Steering Committee and Co-Chairs for the Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS) Summit, which will take place November 13-16, 2012 in Herndon, Virginia, are in the process of building out the structure and format for the event. For more information, and to submit an expression of interest, please visit the Summit website.
Meanwhile, federal agencies and other interested parties are highly encouraged to begin submitting community white papers (CWP), the thoughts and voices of the community through focused, written submissions, prior to the meeting for incorporation into the Summit proceedings. These CWPs will influence the development of the United States IOOS strategy and plan, which will be used to enhance U.S. IOOS capabilities over the next decade. The CWP submissions are due on June 20 and the guidelines can be found here.
Given that the Summit can accommodate 200 individuals, the CWPs will be instrumental as criteria for Summit attendee selection. All CWPs will be reviewed and scored for Quality (1-10), Relevance (1-10) and Helpfulness/Format (1-10) by Chapter Leads and Summit Co-Chairs. One representative from the 30 top-rated submissions will be provided with an invitation to the Summit to assure representation of the topic at the meeting. The Summit Steering Committee and Co-Chairs developed participation criteria that can be found here.
The IOOS Summit Proceedings will be divided into five chapters. The Steering Committee selected individuals to lead those chapters and are in the process of receiving confirmation from those “Chapter Leads.” The Chapters are:
- Highlighting the Past Decade
- User Requirement: Revisiting/Updating
- Observing System Capabilities: Gap Assessment
- Integration Challenges and Opportunities
- Vision for Next 10 Years
The Interagency Ocean Observation Committee (IOOC) Support Office set up a general email account that community members can use for any questions regarding the Summit at iooc@oceanleadership.org. The Office will continue to provide reminders and updates via email to the IOOC, however, if you would like to keep up with the latest Summit updates, ‘like’ us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter.
Final Certification Criteria for Non-Federal Regional Information Coordination Entities (RICE) as Approved by the IOOC is now available. The final report on IOOS Certification Criteria is available here on the IOOC website.
The next full committee meeting will be held on Thursday, June 21, 2012 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. at the Consortium for Ocean Leadership.
More information about the IOOC can be accessed on the IOOC website, which contains updated information regarding commenting opportunities on committee activities, information on upcoming and past events, and relevant scientific, technical and policy publications.
