Program Update: National Ocean Sciences Bowl – June 2012
The second issue of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB) bi-annual newsletter, The Ocean Gyre, was released in June. This issue covers the 2012 Finals Competition in Baltimore, Maryland; the NOSB online game, Ocean Sciences Quiz; the Hurricane bowl’s diversity initiative; and more. To read the entire newsletter, click here.
Also in June, the NOSB staff attended the National Marine Educators Association (NMEA) Conference, which was held from June 24-28 in Anchorage, Alaska at the University of Alaska Anchorage. The conference theme was “North to Alaska’s Seas: A Confluence of Science and Culture.” NOSB had an exhibit booth and gave two sessions: “Engaging Student & Public Audiences with the Ocean Sciences Quiz” and “Science & Policy: Helping Students Make the Connection.” Both sessions were roundtable discussions on how educators can use the Ocean Sciences Quiz and the Science Expert Briefing concepts in their classrooms.
The NOSB is looking for photos for the upcoming creation of an ocean science career booklet. If you have any photos of NOSB alumni or general graduates/post-doctorates doing research in the lab, on a computer or in the water that you are willing to share for possible use in the booklet, please send them to NOSB@oceanleadership.org with a photo description and a source by Friday, July 27.
