Program Update: Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative – January 2013
The Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI), along with federal partners, held a Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill and Ecosystem Science Conference on January 21-23 in New Orleans, Louisiana. The conference was open to the research and stakeholder communities, and had more than 1,000 registrants. Over 500 oral and poster presentations took place over the course of the three-day conference. Admiral Thad Allen provided the keynote speech, addressing the political and legal framework surrounding the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Six plenary panelists were invited to open the conference with an update on the status of research to date and close the conference with a discussion of their vision for the future. Several student travel awards were granted, and the winners of the student awards for outstanding research presentation and poster were announced during the closing plenary. A Public Forum was held during the conference on Tuesday, January 22. Dr. Donald Boesch and Dr. Steven Murawski made presentations to the public regarding the current state of Gulf coast research, followed by a half hour question and answer session.
GoMRI will also be hosting an exhibit booth at this year’s ASLO meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana from February 18-22, so stop by booth #21 if you plan to attend!
