Scholarships, Fellowships, and Internships at Ocean Leadership:

Frank M. Cushing Science Policy Fellowship

A fellowship for marine science postdoctoral scholars and doctoral candidates interested in bridging the gap between science and policy by spending a year in Washington DC researching, developing and advocating for research and sound ocean policy.

Frank Cushing was widely appreciated for his mentorship of young policy makers and his willingness to spend time sharing his expertise, experience and influence with the science community.  This fellowship is designed to expose young ocean scientists to navigating the inside-the-beltway political landscape that Frank negotiated so successfully and for them to learn about the major contributions that he made to science. More information.

IODP-USIO Diversity Internship

Funded through the IODP-USIO, the Diversity Internship is designed to expose minority students to careers in scientific ocean drilling by providing them with a 10-12 week educational and career building experience at one of the institutions that comprises the IODP-USIO. The internship also highlights opportunities within IODP and science program management that may encourage students/interns to pursue advanced studies in Earth System Sciences (or complementary fields) and/or careers in scientific ocean drilling. IODP, which is one of the world’s largest international marine research programs, is dedicated to advancing understanding of Earth’s processes through scientific drilling of the ocean floor. More Information

Schlanger Ocean Drilling Fellowship

Funded by USSSP, the Schlanger Ocean Drilling Fellowship Program offers merit-based awards ($30,000 for one year) for outstanding graduate students to conduct research related to the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program.  Research may be directed toward the objectives of specific expeditions or may address broader themes.  More Information

National Ocean Scholar Program

The National Ocean Scholar Program provides tuition assistance for NOSB students who have an interest in pursuing an ocean or a marine science in their post-high school education.  The application process is only open to past NOSB participants. More Information

HBCU Fellowships

Funded through the U.S. Implementing Organization (USIO) for the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP), the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Fellowship provided a mechanism for students enrolled full-time at HBCUs to pursue studies in Earth Systems sciences (or complementary fields), or to explore a broad range of careers in scientific ocean drilling and large-scale science program management.  This program was replaced in 2011 with the Minorities in Scientific Ocean Drilling Fellowship. More Information

Grants and Funding Opportunities at Ocean Leadership:

IODP Planning Workshops

USSSP sponsors planning workshops to develop new ideas to study the Earth via scientific ocean drilling, to engage new communities in the program, and to synthesize results of past expeditions. Proposal review occurs biannually after the submission deadlines of October 1 and April 1. More Information

IODP Pre-Drilling Activities

USSSP sponsors pre-drilling activities to provide funds in quick response to an opportunity to acquire data or information that will enhance a drilling expedition. Proposals are accepted year round, with priority given to projects that support expeditions already on the IODP schedule. More Information

IODP Platform Participation and Post-Expedition Awards

USSSP provides salaries to US scientists in support of their participation on an IODP expedition.  As part of their participation, US-science party members are eligible for supplemental funds of up to $15,000 for post-expedition science activities to meet publication obligations.  Funds are awarded shortly after each expedition, based on a review of individual participation plans. More Information
