Ben began working at Ocean Leadership (then CORE) in March 2004, eventually advancing to his current position as Coordinator of Federal Interagency Programs. He oversees the effective collaboration among the organization's interagency committees and programs. He also manages the Ocean Research & Resources Advisory Panel, a panel of community experts that provides advice and recommendations to federal agencies. He helps to secure external funding for research programs, develops briefing materials for federal agency and extramural committees, and works to expand Ocean Leadership’s role in the community.
Prior to 2004, he conducted field research into marine mammal acoustics and worked in the Office of Protected Resources at NOAA, where he analyzed permits issued for research on and public display of marine mammals.
Ben received his B.A. from Georgetown University and his M.S. in Environmental Sciences & Policy from Johns Hopkins University. His professional interests include ocean energy, transitioning research results to applications, interagency collaboration, and humpback whale acoustics. He counts surfing, photography, heavyweight boxing history, Scotch whisky production and judo among his (admittedly eclectic) personal interests. He is one of five children, including a sister from South Korea, and is an intense Boston Red Sox supporter.
