Director, National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB)
The Consortium for Ocean Leadership is pleased to announce the search for a new Director for its National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB®) program, a national academic competition for high schools on topics related to the study of the oceans. The Director sets priorities for and oversees coordination of the NOSB and is responsible for managing all aspects of the program including regional coordination, the national finals, budget management, supervision of staff and promotion of the NOSB on a national scale.
Reporting to the Director of Education, the Director of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl:
1. Develops, implements and manages strategies to achieve goals related to the NOSB.
2. Sets and manages priorities for expanding and enhancing the NOSB. Current program priorities are to enhance enrichment opportunities for students, coaches and regional coordinators; expand geographic reach and encourage diversity.
3. Tracks and manages program budget(s); drafts proposals, budgets and reports to funding agencies.
4. Identifies funding sources and partnership opportunities, working with consultants and staff to generate support for the NOSB.
5. Represents Ocean Leadership at various scientific and educational meetings, preparing and presenting written and oral briefings and reports on NOSB and other programs as necessary.
6. Aligns NOSB activities with other educational activities at Ocean Leadership and participates on the development of new initiatives and programming beyond NOSB.
7. Stays abreast of trends, developments and best practices in the field and keeps the program fresh and in line with current methods.
To qualify, you must possess a Master’s degree in marine science, marine policy or science education and coursework/training in education/teaching, as well as a minimum of five years of experience coordinating a nationwide program; prior experience with an academic competition program preferred. Excellent written and oral communication skills are required, including ability to present material to various audiences. Must demonstrate commitment to diversity and be able to work with people of various ages and backgrounds. You must have excellent problem-solving, organizational and time-management skills. Must be proficient with MS Office software, e-mail and web-based technologies. Working knowledge of research and educational communities in marine science necessary; familiarity with the NOSB preferred. Experience managing staff and interacting with communications and development staff preferred.

Program Associate
The Consortium for Ocean Leadership is pleased to announce the search for a Program Associate to support the Science and Federal Coordination Programs with a focus on the activities of the National Oceanographic Partnership Program (NOPP), a collaboration of fifteen federal agencies that provide leadership and coordination of national oceanographic research and education initiatives. This is a regular, full-time, non-exempt position.
As the individual responsible for the efficient administrative operations of assigned program(s), the Program Associate:
1. Organizes, attends, and reports on meetings and workshops of national and international steering committees, governing councils, and working groups associated with the ongoing programs.
2. Provides programmatic support functions such as preparing briefing materials, arranging telephone, VTC, web cam, and face-to-face conferencing, and maintaining project databases and websites.
3. Assists in the preparation of program communications materials and responses to external requests for program information.
4. Provides support for the programmatic and/or administrative requirements of the corporation, including maintaining the program websites and exhibit booths, preparing and distributing promotional and informational brochures, and other tasks as assigned.
To qualify, you must possess a Bachelor’s degree, preferably in one of the natural sciences, and at least two years experience in providing support to an academically focused, scientific program (or equivalent science training and management experience). Familiarity with ocean science is preferred. Master’s degree in a relevant field may be substituted for the required work experience. Excellent written and oral communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail are required. The successful applicant will have demonstrated problem-solving capabilities with the ability to exercise good judgment and to anticipate and mitigate problems with events or products. Initiative, creativity and the ability to work well both independently and as part of a team are a must. Excellent listening, note taking and research skills required. Demonstrated proficiency with all MS Office applications is necessary; knowledge of graphics and web page layout and design is preferred.

Education Coordinator
The Consortium for Ocean Leadership is pleased to announce the search for an Education Coordinator to provide administrative/programmatic support for educational programs and projects. Primary work is to support the efficient administrative operations of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB) Program with a secondary focus on support for OSER (Ocean Science Education Retreats) and other educational programs or initiatives designed to benefit the Ocean Leadership membership.
Reporting to the NOSB Director, the Education Coordinator:
1. Assists with organization of key program elements (Final and Regional Competitions, meetings, staff training, workshops) and provides relevant logistical support.
2. Handles solicitation and acquisition of new questions each year and maintains the integrity of the NOSB question database, reviewing questions for accuracy and appropriate level.
3. Reviews the credentials of potential Technical Advisory Panel members; organizes and participates in Panel meetings.
4. Manages and maintains NOSB records, office equipment and supplies and gathers relevant information using electronic resources such as the Internet.
5. Works with internal Travel and Meeting Planner to arrange travel and hotel for NOSB activities.
6. Initiates purchase requests for program activities and follows-through with vendors to ensure receipt.
7. Creates and distributes text and graphic documents and slide presentations for NOSB.
8. Maintains data records and provides office support for annual graduate program and faculty surveys of degree-granting member institutions; responds to member requests for specific data.
9. Manages other components and enhancements of the program (ie. scholarship program) as assigned.
10. Assists in the logistics and scheduling of biennial OSER (Ocean Sciences Education Retreats) meetings.
To qualify, you must possess a Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a scientific, education or policy field. Familiarity with ocean science or marine education is preferred. Two years of administrative/program support experience is required. Requires ability to exercise discretion, exhibit a proactive approach and make recommendations about program options to increase efficiency. Must have excellent problem-solving capabilities, excellent written and oral communication skills and excellent organizational skills, with strong attention to detail. Must have proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, database creation and management and e-mail; experience with graphics and web page layout and design programs/software preferred. Must be personable and have demonstrated ability to deal comfortably and tactfully with a variety of stakeholders including international scientists and heads of Federal agencies and academic institutions. Occasional domestic travel required.

Undergraduate and Graduate Internships
The Consortium for Ocean Leadership offers Washington, DC-based internships for students, faculty and staff of the Ocean Leadership member institutions. Over the years, interns have come from a variety of backgrounds, disciplines and institutions in the academic and government sectors and have made many valuable contributions to the mission and work of Ocean Leadership.
Ocean Leadership internships are designed to further professional development and provide assistance to the Ocean Leadership full-time staff. In addition to project work relevant to each intern’s research, area of concentration, or degree, each participant will learn about the entire spectrum of Ocean Leadership activities including involvement in the legislative process, projects with various federal oceanographic agencies and a variety of educational initiatives. Legislative activities include monitoring, analyzing and reporting on relevant bills, developing information for congressional members and committees, preparing for Ocean Leadership representation at hearings and pursuing other items on Ocean Leadership’s legislative agenda. Federal agency activities include development and implementation of a variety of national programs. Education program and policy work may focus on diverse educational arenas including K-12, undergraduate, graduate, postdoctoral and informal education.
Applicants must be students, faculty, or staff in good standing at an Ocean Leadership member institution, have strong written and communications skills, and demonstrate an ability to take personal initiative. Applicants should prepare a letter to their Ocean Leadership representative or point-of-contact, describing their interests and qualifications, accompanied by a C.V. or resume describing their academic and work experience, along with a list of three professional references. The ocean leadership representative or point-of-contact will review the applications and transmit a slate of nominees to the Ocean Leadership External Affairs Director for further review. Final selection is made by the President of Ocean Leadership.
Internships are available year-round and provide a base stipend of $1500 per month. Institutions are expected to match stipends for a minimum of 2 months and cover intern travel costs to and from DC. The intern's medical insurance coverage will remain with his or her individual policy or student group health insurance.
