I was very impressed with the strong community voice concerning the JOIDES Resolution schedule. Although the cost of transit to the Southern Alaska Margin expedition still requires its delay to 2013, IODP commingled funds have allowed Expedition 342 “Newfoundland Paleogene and Cretaceous Sediment Drifts” to be put on the schedule for June-August 2012.
Dear Colleagues,
As emphasized in the article on page 8 of Core Discoveries, community input is vital to the new drilling program. The new Science Plan outlines where we want to go. Drilling proposals provide the road map to achieve our goals. The scientific community should begin proposing ideas in all disciplines for future scientific drilling. [...]
I was recently asked to speak about scientific ocean drilling at the 2011 American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) meeting.
Please help shape the future of scientific ocean drilling by providing input on the draft science plan. I have just returned from the IODP Science Planning Committee meeting and an IODP symposium associated with the International Conference on Paleoceanography.
The U.S. Advisory Committee for Scientific Ocean Drilling (USAC) met last month in Austin, Texas. We had a fruitful meeting with enthusiastic discussions about recent expeditions, science support, education and outreach, and activities aimed at planning for the next drilling program.
Dear Colleagues,
With planning for the next drilling program underway on multiple fronts, I would like to invite your input to the U.S. Advisory Committee for Scientific Ocean Drilling (USAC). USAC is a 12-member representative body that advises the U.S. Science Support Program (USSSP) on programmatic and policy issues. We represent you, and your [...]
Dear All,
As I write this letter, the JOIDES Resolution has just departed from Townsville, Australia and begun IODP Expedition 317 to the Canterbury Basin off New Zealand’s South Island. All of us who have sailed with the program can easily relate to the 30 scientists from around the world as they settle into their [...]
IODP has entered an exciting time and finally realized the vision of conducting simultaneous expeditions on the Chikyu, the newly refurbished JOIDES Resolution, and mission-specific platforms.
Earlier this month I had the privilege of touring the refitted JOIDES Resolution. Having followed the progress and challenges of the work in the shipyard from afar, I was especially impressed to see how much the ship has been improved.
Even as we celebrate the sailing of the refitted JOIDES Resolution and look forward to an exciting year of drilling expeditions, we also have to recognize that in these uncertain times, the future of scientific ocean drilling beyond 2013 is by no means guaranteed.
Dear Colleagues:
First let me say that I feel honored to serve as the new chair of the U.S. Advisory Committee for Scientific Ocean Drilling (USAC). Our broad community has long acted as a well-organized and engaged group of researchers who have collaborated at the national and international levels required to accomplish our [...]
Dear Colleagues:
My term as chair of the U.S. Advisory Committee for Scientific Ocean Drilling (USAC) has drawn to a close, and it pleases me to introduce Brad Clement of Florida International University as the next USAC chair. As a first-rate researcher in paleomagnetism, Brad has had a long history of involvement in [...]
