How Long Does it Take for Earth’s Magnetic Field To Reverse?

The time is takes for the Earth’s magnetic field to reverse polarity is approximately 7,000 years, but the time is takes for the reversal to occur is shorter at low latitudes than high, a geologist using cores from the Ocean Drilling Program has concluded.

The Joint Oceanographic Institutions, a consortium of 20 academic institutions, has signed a cooperative agreement with the National Science Foundation to lead U.S. participation in the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) through the U.S. Science Support Program (USSSP).
