HBCU Fellowship Objectives and Guidelines


Objectives

The objectives of this fellowship are:
•    To provide meaningful educational experience that conveys both the excitement and the wide range of career opportunities available in scientific ocean drilling for students enrolled at a U.S. HBCUs, and
•    To encourage more students from HBCUs to pursue advanced studies and careers in earth systems science (or complimentary fields) and/or science program management.

Guidelines

Award
The total award is $15,000 per year for 26-week fellowships and $7,500 for 13-week fellowships. The award amount and period of performance are established in the contractual award letter accompanying this guide. Fellowship funds may be used to cover stipend, tuition and benefits, equipment up to $2,500, and research expenses including travel. No part of this award may be spent on institutional overhead or administration.

HBCU Fellowship Eligibility:
•    Full-time Graduate or Undergraduate student enrolled at a U.S. HBCU
•    Major in Science, Education, Engineering, or Communications
•    In partnership with a faculty mentor, work on a project that meets Ocean Leadership’s research and E&O goals
•    Work part-time (20 hours/week) on the proposed HBCU project during the academic year and full-time (40 hours/week) during the summer months.

Ocean Leadership HBCU Fellowship Goals:
•    Create classroom materials that utilize results from marine research and comply with National Science Education standards
•    Provide young scientists with hands-on research experiences utilizing data and materials obtained from marine research 
•    Expand the distribution of research samples obtained through scientific ocean drilling to new, related fields of study

Evaluation
HBCU Fellowship awards are made annually following a competition among students enrolled in a U.S. HBCU. Review of fellowship applications is provided by a sub-committee of the IODP-U.S. Implementing Organization (USIO) management structure.

Obligation
As close to the termination date as possible, but no later than three months following the termination, each Fellow is expected to submit a copy of his/her Fellowship Final Report to the HBCU Fellowship Coordinator at Ocean Leadership.

In some cases, awardees may be asked to submit an article based on their fellowship experience, which may be used in Ocean Leadership publications.
