William Hurd Finnegan
I am originally from Bay Springs, Ms, a small town about 50 miles north of Hattiesburg. I graduated high school in 1980 and went on to get a degree in Geology from Southern Miss. I graduated in 1985, just about the time the oilfield industry went bust. For the next five years I worked in a 7-11 type store, drove trucks, worked in a manufacturing company and went back to school to become certified to teach.
This is my twentieth year of teaching, the last ten being at Davidson High School. I finished my masters in 2003 from Mississippi State University and have since been able to participate in several professional development opportunities. I attended the Modeling Geosciences workshop in Boulder, Colorado, a weather education workshop at the National Weather Service’s training center in Kansas City, Missouri and have traveled to the Yellowstone area as a teaching assistant with Mississippi State’s Teachers in Geosciences program.
In what little spare time I have left I devote to a passion for the outdoors. I truly love mountains and raging whitewater. One of my best memories is getting snowed on in July as we were trying to summit Grey’s Peak in Colorado. In 2003 I fulfilled a 23 year old dream of going to Mt. St. Helens. It is truly a special place. I also love to read and collect model trains. We have bought and are remodeling a house in Bay Minette, Alabama and that is where I will build my railroad.
