Location:  The Integrated Ocean Drilling Program’s (IODP) Gulf Coast Repository at Texas A&M University
College Station, Texas

The 2008 School of Rock teacher research experience is scheduled to begin Sunday, 6 July, 2008 at the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program’s (IODP) Gulf Coast Repository at Texas A&M University.  What’s so special about the Gulf Coast Repository?  About 60 miles of ocean cores can be viewed and studied there!

During School of Rock research experiences, K-12, informal, and undergraduate educators will have daily opportunities to conduct hands-on analyses of sediment and hard-rock cores with scientists and technicians who specialize in IODP research.  This year’s workshop will focus on how cores shed light on climate change cycles of the past – and will include investigation of paleoceanography, sedimentology, biostratigraphy; seafloor spreading, composition and structure of the oceanic crust, and methods for sampling the subseafloor environment. The workshop also provides educators with time to brainstorm with each other and our scientists to plan new classroom activities based on their new knowledge and research.
