Editor - Lorri Peters

If the idea of sailing on a ship does not appeal to you, there are more traditional jobs available that provide administrative, technical, logistical, and publications support to the Program and are essential for making sure that the research conducted on the ship is preserved for future generations. One such group of individuals is the editors. Editors assist the scientific participants of each expedition in publishing their results so that other scientists, legislators, teachers, students, and the public can benefit from their findings. An editor is typically assigned the publication of 2-3 expedition volumes a year and has to read and approve all the material associated with each volume. This material includes chapters describing the scientific methods and tools used, the measurements made and data collected, and the scientific conclusions reached by the scientists. The chapters are accompanied by graphics, photos, and data sets and sometimes short movies, poster-sized illustrations, or special software, all of which must be tracked by the editor. Because of modern publishing methods, IODP editors work on computers and have to ensure that the content of each publication is preserved regardless of whether it appears on paper, electronic media such as DVDs, or on the web.
