Second Engineer

Jorn Verschoor

Jörn has always been attracted to life at sea. His father helped build the JOIDES Resolution and sailed on the ship for 30 years. When his father returned from an expedition, he had exciting stories about the places he had been to and the interesting things he had seen. After Jörn finished high school, he decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and go to Maritime school to be an engineer on a ship. After four years of training he sailed with a gas tanker and then came to the JOIDES Resolution as the 2nd Engineer. In this position Jörn is responsible for the engines, pumps, compressors, air conditioning, electric motors and all other things that keep the ship running. In addition to his mechanical skills, Jörn must also have good record-keeping skills. As a requirement on the ship, Engineers must keep records of all they do to keep the ship up and running.

Jörn loves his job and is happy to work the long hours. When asked if he would change anything about his career choice, he said there was nothing he would rather be doing and would recommend the job to anyone that likes mechanical things, traveling, and seeing the world. It is through his work that Jörn makes a contribution to science, keeping the ship in good running condition.
