Workshops

Selected participants will attend three workshops during the course of the symposium, one from each of the following three themes:

1. Funding
Funding Sources Beyond NSF: In this workshop, program managers will discuss funding sources beyond NSF, best proposal practices, and common grant writing mistakes.

International Collaborations: The International Collaborations Workshop will present resources available to help researchers participate in international activities and exchange information regarding the status of international science.

2. Policy
Science and Congress: This public policy workshop will focus on Congress by specifically exploring how decisions that affect science directions are made in Congress and how scientists can communicate with policymakers.

Steering Science Policy: The Steering Science Policy Workshop will focus on scientific communities and will explore how scientific societies and scientific non-profits can steer science policy and contribute to national debate.

3. Communication
Communicating with the Press: This workshop will answer questions such as: What should I say when a reporter calls? What is the role of the press officer at my university or at a science agency? How do reporters obtain scientific information?

Working with Museums: The Working with Museums Workshop will explore how scientists can work with museums and other public venues to translate science for the public. Funding Sources Beyond NSF: In the Alternate Funding Workshop, program managers will discuss funding sources beyond NSF, best proposal practices, and common grant writing mistakes.
