Blog Report from Friday, July 11

Blog Report from Friday, July 11

The morning began with a warm-up puzzle construction helping us review the importance of teamwork and strategy planning. Kristen led our morning lecture about Arctic Coring. We discussed the importance of drilling in particular locations, as well as a discussion on the nature of science in the rationale behind drilling.  Moving to the lab for a discovery activity, we made some basic observations on the drill cores.
After lunch, we continued our work in the lab with our discovery activity and made interpretations based on our observations. John helped us in linking observations, regional geology, and glacial land data to an interpretation of the ocean cores we observed, which ties glacial geology to marine geology.
Later in the afternoon, Joerge and Jay lectured us on ophiolites, and we did a hands-on activity which showed that seismic velocities change when rocks are altered or metamorphosed. Returning to the lab we observed drill cores of ophiolite rocks, where we could put our finger on the contact between sheeted dikes and gabbro. (Which was REALLY exciting!!)
