I write to you on behalf of the U.S. Advisory Committee on Scientific Ocean Drilling (USAC) to help spread the word about ongoing activities and transformations within IODP, specifically on leadership changes at IODP-TAMU, the SODV conversion, and industry contracts for the JOIDES Resolution.

Changes at Texas A&M University - IODP: Jeff Fox and Jack Baldauf have stepped down from their positions as Director of Science Services and Deputy Director of Science Services of IODP-TAMU, respectively. Plans for the future leadership of IODP-TAMU during this transition have been outlined by Bjorn Kjerfve, Dean of Geosciences at TAMU.

As the refurbishment of the JOIDES Resolution nears completion and as we begin to prepare for renewal of IODP, it is now more important than ever to appoint strong candidates to the U.S. Science Advisory Committee for Scientific Ocean Drilling (USAC) and the IODP Science Advisory Structure (SAS). I urge you to nominate yourself and/or your colleagues to serve in the SAS or on USAC.

The involvement of individual scientists -- not only as expedition participants, but also as committee members who shape and support scientific planning and outcomes -- has been the cornerstone of IODP. IODP belongs to the international drilling community, and it counts on your participation and your input to succeed.

Summary

A Geological Society of America (GSA) Penrose Conference on ophiolites and oceanic crust brought together a multidisciplinary group of 86 international geoscientists in Marshall, California, from September 13 to 17, 1998. It was jointly sponsored by JOI/USSSP, the National Science Foundation’s Marine Geology and Geophysics Program, and GSA. The purpose of the conference was to: 1) reevaluate existing models of oceanic crust generation, ophiolite formation and ophiolite-ocean crust analogy; 2) explore the possibility of reaching a new consensus on the architecture of oceanic lithosphere; and 3) discuss the significance of ophiolites and oceanic crust for past and present plate tectonic processes.

U.S.-affiliated scientists who participate in the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) may receive limited supplemental funding for post-expedition activities through the U.S. Science Support Program (USSSP) as managed by the Consortium for Ocean Leadership. Post-expedition activity (PEA) awards are intended to help participants defray the costs associated with fulfilling their obligation to submit and publish the scientific results of their expedition-related research in IODP publications or in the open literature. PEA awards typically provide modest resources for short-term core characterization efforts or for pilot studies aimed at identifying promising avenues for future research.

In response to a call for applications issued by the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Management International, scientists whose primary affiliation lies with a U.S.-based institution may apply to sail through the U.S. Science Support Program (USSSP) of the Consortium for Ocean Leadership (Ocean Leadership). Staffing decisions are made through a joint process involving the U.S. Advisory Committee for Scientific Ocean Drilling (USAC), the co-chief scientists of the expedition, and the relevant expedition operator. This process begins 6-9 months before the expedition and results in an integrated party chosen to meet the scientific objectives of the expedition, balanced by national affiliation as outlined in IODP's international agreements. Dear Colleagues:

As you know, due to nearly flat-funding of NSF combined with the rising cost of oil, NSF funding of IODP is less than we had hoped for and the refit of the JOIDES Resolution is taking longer than expected (see recent Update: IODP). Despite these difficulties, it is important for us to remember that NSF is still supporting IODP at a very high level and to focus on the fact that the program continues to produce groundbreaking research. However, to warrant continued and hopefully increased support in the future, it is our job to ensure that colleagues and decision makers know the results of this exciting research.

Through its Ocean Drilling Program (OD), the National Science Foundation supports scientific drilling-related research focused on pre-drilling and drilling concurrent activities related to the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP). OD supports the development of downhole instruments and techniques, collection of site survey data, and investigations of potential drilling regions. For extended research,

Educate the Next Generation of Geoscientists

Many of the most innovative discoveries made through the IODP have been in newly emerging interdisciplinary fields of research. Scientists that lead synergistic activities to stimulate novel interdisciplinary inquiry and to expand the scope of ocean drilling science play a vital role in shaping the future of IODP and ensuring its success. Communicate Your Innovative Discoveries

YOU are one of the most important messengers IODP has in communicating and promoting the innovative discoveries of IODP to a wider audience beyond the drilling community. Diverse science communities, non-scientists, university administrators and policy makers all need to know of IODP’s importance for the program to thrive. The message that you convey will be different depending on the audience. Here are some things you can do:

Acknowledge IODP whenever you give a talk. If you present research results that include data or samples collected by the drilling program, please provide information about IODP, or, at a minimum, show a slide of one of the ships.

The primary goal of the workshop program is to identify promising new scientific objectives and research opportunities.
