Description
A Science Reader's Guide to CORKS and CORKS in the Crust Parts 1 and 2 are meant to supplement and support the use of E-vents from the Atlantis -- An Expedition to Corks and Vents on the Juan de Fuca Plate, a website developed during an expedition to the seafloor in September, 2007. Together, the activities, readings, personal accounts and videos on the website will introduce upper level high school and early undergraduate students to the world beneath the seafloor and the methods we use to monitor and measure changes in the crust.

The Consortium for Ocean Leadership is seeking an enthusiastic teacher for a one-year fellowship in Washington, DC. The teacher will work with Deep Earth Academy staff to develop ocean science curricula, produce teacher-training workshops, maintain communication within a community of educators and assist with conference logistics. The position requires a minimum of 3 years classroom science teaching experience, a strong background in earth or ocean sciences, and temporary relocation to Washington, DC. Strong writing and computer technology skills are a plus. Salary will be commensurate to incumbent’s current salary. Full time and part-time schedules will be considered.

I've been teaching at UMass-Amherst since 1985. I grew up in the Midwest (Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois) where I developed a boyhood interest in fossils. That interest has never faded; I'm still an avid rock hound to this day. Pursuing a geology degree at Northern Illinois University seemed like a no-brainer after high school even though I never had an Earth science course. I had the opportunity to do field work in Antarctica as an undergrad and stayed on at NIU for a Masters degree and two more trips "to the ice". I did a Ph.D. at the University of Colorado where I really got into the geology of the Colorado Plateau; about half of my research still deals with Cretaceous age

Bob and Tina King were participants of Deep Earth Academy's 2007 School of Rock, after which each worked exceptionally hard to bring the information they learned to the level of their students - 5th through 12th grade. Dr. Mark Leckie, one of the primary instructors of School of Rock, and the Kings remained in touch through the lesson development process to be sure the content remained authentic and accurate, while becoming age appropriate. This relationship culminated in an invitation for Mark to share his knowledge and infectious enthusiasm with their students directly.

Magnets at the Core - January 2008 Activity of the Month

Description

Students use core models made from swim noodles with embedded magnets and compasses to measure and record magnetic orientation. These model cores simulate the magnetic fields recorded in real deep-sea sediment cores obtained from a scientific ocean drilling vessel such as the JOIDES Resolution.

In this activity, students access online data and generate graphs that illustrate distribution changes in marine microfossils preserved in ocean sediment cores. After graphing the data, students observe and compare their findings with the class.

This Outreach Toolkit for Scientists has been designed to help scientists conduct successful outreach experiences for young audiences, their educators and the scientists themselves. All stakeholders benefit from the presentation of scientific research, modeling scientific thinking and developing an understanding of how science “works” beyond the beaker and lab coat. It is important for students and educators to learn how deep ocean drilling helps scientists understand Earth’s history and processes, and the contribution the research has made to our current bank of knowledge.
