2011 – Senate Oceans Caucus Inaugural Reception

Please join us to celebrate the inauguration of the Senate Oceans Caucus.  Covering two thirds of the earth’s surface, the ocean not only provides the air we breathe and the water we drink, it has significant implications for the nation’s economy and provides jobs in many sectors, including tourism, fishing, ports and shipping, marine transportation, resource extraction, and scientific research as well.  This newly founded Senate Oceans Caucus is an important, bi-partisan group that will increase awareness and find common ground in responding to issues facing the oceans.  The Caucus membership will work to ensure a sustainable, science-based, and efficient approach to the utilization of our ocean resources.

When: September 13th
Where: Hart Senate Office Building, Room 902
Time: 6:00-8:00pm
Please send RSVPs and questions to:  senateoceansreception@oceanleadership.org

Please note:  The Hart Senate Office Building is located on Constitution Ave and 2nd St. NE.  The two sets of elevators in the Hart Building are referred to as the North elevators and the South elevators.  Only the North elevators can be used to access the Ninth floor meeting room location.

We thank the following organizations for their help in sponsoring this event:

The Consortium for Ocean Leadership is a Washington, DC-based nonprofit organization that represents 99 of the leading public and private ocean research education institutions, aquaria and industry, working to advance research, education and sound ocean policy.  The organization also manages ocean research and education programs in areas of scientific ocean drilling, ocean observing, ocean exploration, and ocean partnerships.  Ocean Leadership provides expertise in managing, coordinating, and facilitating scientific programs and partnerships, influencing sound ocean policy, and educating the next generation of ocean leaders.

The National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA), the nation’s leading recreational marine industry trade association, represents nearly 1,700 boat builders, engine manufacturers, and marine accessory manufacturers who collectively produce more than 80 percent of all recreational marine products made in the United States.

Ocean Conservancy is the world’s foremost advocate for the oceans. Through science-based advocacy, research, and public education, we inform, inspire and empower people to speak and act for the oceans. Ocean Conservancy is headquartered in Washington, DC, and has offices in Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Pacific, with support from more than half a million members and volunteers.

NOIA is the only national trade association representing all segments of the offshore industry with an interest in the exploration and production of both traditional and renewable energy resources on the nation’s outer continental shelf.  NOIA’s mission is to secure reliable access and a fair regulatory and economic environment for the companies that develop the nation’s valuable offshore energy resources in an environmentally responsible manner.

Founded in 1912, AAPA today represents 160 of the leading seaport authorities in the United States, Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean and more than 300 sustaining and associate members, firms and individuals with an interest in seaports. Public port authorities are charged with facilitating commerce for the good of the nation, and seaports have been delivering prosperity for centuries.  Serving as hubs of trade, high-paying jobs and intermodal transportation, ports are responsible for handling the imported raw materials and components that American manufacturers use, as well as moving American exports out the “last mile” of the U.S. transportation system to a waiting world.

Since 1970, CSO has represented the interests of the Governors of the nation’s thirty-five coastal states and territories, including the Great Lakes states, on issues relating to the sound management and development of coastal and ocean resources.

The National Federation of Regional Associations for Coastal and Ocean Observing (NFRA) is a non-profit organization formed by the Regional Associations for Coastal and Ocean Observing in support of the Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS).  IOOS is a national program created to ensure the sustained observation of our nation’s coastal oceans and to develop information products from those observations to assist people in their lives and livelihoods.

Ocean Champions is the only ocean group to endorse and support pro- ocean candidates for the U.S. Congress, working to elect good ocean advocates and beat anti-ocean politicians.  Since 2004 we’ve helped elect dozens of champions from both sides of the aisle, winning 80% of the time.  There are currently 30 Ocean Champions’ endorsed members serving in Congress.
