Ocean and Coastal Science Community Welcome Reception

Why:  To celebrate the beginning of the new 112th Congress as we discuss how advancements in coastal and ocean science can benefit our nation’s economy and ecosystems

The Consortium for Ocean Leadership is a Washington, DC-based nonprofit organization that represents 94 of the leading public and private ocean research and education institutions, aquaria and industry with the mission to advance research, education and sound ocean policy. The organization also manages ocean research and education programs in areas of scientific ocean drilling, ocean observing, ocean exploration, and ocean partnerships.

The American Geophysical Union (AGU) is an international scientific society of more than 60,000 members representing over 148 countries, committed to advancing Earth and space science. AGU provides a collaborative forum for the geophysical community through scientific journals, meetings, a weekly news service, scientific and technical committee activities, and online data and information services.  AGU links scientists with policy makers as resources in order to facilitate informed decisions and ensure a sustainable future.

The Alliance for Earth Observations brings together those that develop the tools to monitor the planet with those that need and use the information to manage it. The Alliance promotes the importance of continued and sustained monitoring of the land, air, and sea for scientific, societal, and economic benefit. Members of the Alliance include leading business, academic and non-governmental organizations. The Alliance is a publicly and privately funded initiative of the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES).

The Sea Grant Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to ‘Science Serving America’s Coasts’ through the National Sea Grant College Program.  SGA member institutions include 32 university-based programs representing all of the coastal states.   The SGA works to enhance the economic, environmental and social potential of the nation’s coastal, marine and Great Lakes resources through integrated research, education and outreach, and provides a unified voice for the member institutions on issues of importance to the oceans and coasts.

The National Federation of Regional Associations for Coastal and Ocean Observing (NFRA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring that people have access to quality information about the nation's oceans, coasts and Great Lakes for their lives and livelihoods. NFRA supports the full developing of an operational Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS) that links federal assets and capabilities with regional coastal observing systems that can tailor information products to address the specific needs of the nation's diverse natural systems and local economies.
