Application
The 2011-2012 Schlanger Fellowship application instructions are posted below. The files are optimized for Adobe Reader 8 or Adobe Acrobat Professional 8. A complete application includes the following materials:
1. Application Form - Read and fill out the application form completely. Be sure to read, sign, and date the second page of the application form. If an item does not apply, enter N/A or not applicable. An applicant who is not a U.S. citizen must be a full-time student at a U.S. institution.
2. Research Proposal - The research proposal is the key part of the fellowship application. Proposals should address a problem of choice that is within the scope of research issues relevant to the broad program goals of the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) and must use cores, downhole logs, or other data from IODP, Ocean Drilling Project (ODP), or Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) expeditions as a major component of their research.
The research project should clearly be the applicant's own endeavor and should demonstrate the student’s capability or potential for carrying out the project. Schlanger Fellowships are not intended to further support or supplement already-funded research but to provide support for innovative, exciting, and unique research. Proposals meeting these criteria are strongly encouraged and are more favorably viewed.
Research goals should be realistic and attainable within the expected period of the fellowship. As necessary, the methodology section should also discuss any relevant pilot studies, projected numbers of samples, sampling strategies, and both limitations and strengths of the proposed techniques. Literature citations should be included throughout the proposal wherever appropriate.
Each research proposal must include a short title, an abstract (a concise summary of about 100 words), and a description of the proposed research (statement of the problem, background and relevance to previous work, discussion of methodology and procedure to be followed, explanation of new or unusual techniques, and discussion of expected results, significance, and application).
Research proposals must be written using Times or Times New Roman 12 pt font with 1" margins and must not exceed four (4) pages of text (not including references). Figures must be included as an attachment to the proposal and should be limited to two (2) pages.
3. Proposal Implementation - Provide full and clear answers to proposal implementation questions listed on the form.
4. Curriculum Vitae - Submit a curriculum vitae, which should include relevant educational history (degrees and dates awarded); fellowships, scholarships, and awards received; academic honors received; society membership(s); employment experience (including any internships); and any authored or co-authored journal articles, abstracts, or other publications related to your proposed research.
5. Faculty Advisor Material - The applicant’s faculty advisor must complete the following material and submit to the Consortium for Ocean Leadership. The material must arrive at the Consortium for Ocean Leadership office on or before November 15:
• A copy of the faculty advisor's two (2) page curriculum vitae.
• Faculty Advisor Certification, signed and dated by the applicant's faculty advisor.
• Faculty Advisor Reference Form, completed by the faculty advisor.
• A letter of recommendation from the faculty advisor addressing the degree of originality and independence the applicant has shown in developing the proposed fellowship research. It should also address how the research is intellectually and fiscally linked to the advisor's research (funded or pending).
6. Second Reference Material - In addition to the material submitted by the applicant's faculty advisor, a second reference is needed to complete the application process. The second reference must complete the following material and submit to the Consortium for Ocean Leadership. The material must arrive at the Consortium for Ocean Leadership office on or before November 15:
• Second Reference Form, completed by the second reference.
• A supplementary letter or statement of support is required from the second reference. The reference should be acquainted with the applicant's academic and professional background.
