Q: How big is the dredge and how many rocks can it collect? The Dredge:
A: The dredge is actually made up mostly from chain, all inter-linked together. The front or mouth of the dredge is a metal casting that is about 1 meter wide and a half meter across. Each corner connects to a chain that is designed so that two sides will break if it snags on a big rock.
The dredge holds a lot of rocks because the chain bag that is attached to the mouth is as tall as a person. Our record for this cruise so far is collecting 500kg (over 700 pounds) of rocks on one dredge! That is a few hundred rocks of various sizes!
