Ocean Careers: Texas to Russia Posted by: Rory Wilson 11:00 AM Indian Ocean I enjoyed the start of the day today. In my emails, we had an update from the summer camp in Texas that we video-conferenced with last Wednesday. They shared some pictures of their week learning about ocean careers. Most of the students are in the 11th or 12th grade. In this first picture, they were also on a research boat for a trip offshore.
In the image below, the students were online with our ship, the Revelle, and also had presentation slides in the background while they asked the scientists questions about their ocean careers. We had geophysicists, petrologists and geologists on hand in our lab who talked about their diverse paths into science.
Then, while I was finishing up loading these pictures, Oleg, our scientist from Russia, came in and asked me if we could load some of his pictures into our project files onboard. He has been taking some excellent pictures of our expedition and we were able to put about 500 of his pictures onto the Revelle network server for all of our team. Here is a photo I took of Oleg the other day.
I have to show you a couple of his pictures here! In the photo below on the left, Lee, our seismics expert is preparing to lower the air gun that is attached to the float. There are two of these that go into the water and then the science team (right) sends out the "eel" or streamer to read the signals that are reflected back. The team on the streamer includes Dax, Masako, Amy, Brandi and Lee.
